Battering me with POPUPS ! Grrrrr !
Published on July 24, 2009 By mike b1954 In Personal Computing

Ok Guys and gals ! Hopefully a quickie question and answer ...

Every day / night / TIME ~ ~ that I turn my PC on I keep getting a popup from Windows defender saying I have not scanned my PC for "X" ( being the number ) of days and my PC is at risk if I do not scan ..

Being a creature of habit .. I always scan with defender while I am having my dinner ... so its a daily routine for me , and always has been ..

BUT it still popsup very annoyingly ... which leads me to some questions ..

1. How do I stop this happening ?

2. Is it a really necessary prog to use ...

3. What alternatives are there ? ( if any)

I already use AVG , CC , Iobit disc defrag and registry cleaner and Iobit security360 as well as Advanced System care , again from Iobit ....

oh, and Spybot S & D ... I run those apps every 3/4 days ...

4. So , Do I really need Windows defender  ? If not is it easily uninstalled  ?

Sorry about the Big font , people ... I have mislaid my spex ...

Mike

No, window's defender is for computer illiterate old people, so if Your running all of those programs (seems like a bit of overkill to me haha) Then you don't need it. I found this guide. Hopefully that helps.

Go to Security Center in Control Panel and turn Windows Defender off if you are running AVG..  Defender is not very effective.  Don't mess with trying to uninstall, it could cause more problems that that would solve.  At times it's handy to have, like when doing a Windows reinstall and you haven't gotten AVG installed yet.  Hope this helps.

Hi Mike,

Windows Defender is not the best way to scan your PC, I read an Article a few weeks ago and it was written that Windows Defender scans ONLY inactive Spyware but NO active Spyware. Defender did not identify 1/3 of the active Spy- and Adware and the Program does not check incoming E-Mails and Downloads. So, i hope i could help you Mike and sorry for my english.

PS: It's better to use a Security Program like Norton 360 or Kaspersky.

Illiterate old people, my goodness how the kids around here don't ever think they will get 'old' or that they won't ever be talked about in the same way.

For those that don't know Window's Defender started life out as a 'thired party' piece of software.  MS obtained it and made some changes to it. Like any piece of software folks are going to have opinions as to how good it is at what it is supposed to do.

I used to run several spyware cleaning programs and clean up programs.  Running all of them does take time.  I now run just one all in one program, and no I'm going to say which one because someone will say 'oh I wouldn't run that one'.

run what is sufficient to make you confident that your computer is clean and not infected with 'bad things'.  I would think you could stop running Defender and still have things covered.  Just my opinion.

I found that if you use CCleaner and have it set to clear Defenders logs,it will "forget" when it's last scan was. I just unchecked it in CCleaner and the problem went away. It now shows the last scan every time and I get no pop-up or tray notice.

Windows Defender is like an empty suit of mail: looks impressive, but doesn't do anything.

Ahhh, an empty 'suit of mail', something that only 'illiterate old people' would know about Mirsguy.

This "old person" gave up wearing a suit of mail  when my fly rusted shut after a rainstorm.   I should have purchased  the stainless steel 3 piece .

I believe no antivirus or anti-spyware programs are required to be installed on your system if your hard drive is properly configured.

Defender, according to me surely is a good option to scan your PC.

"Windows Defender is able to detect and remove threats posed by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Also includes Real Time Protection to monitor key points in the operating system for changes"

Infact I do not have any security software on my system except than Windows Defender and to be very honest my system never got infected in the past 5 years.

And my notebook which had Kaspersky2009 installed on it, just got infected the last month. Can call it Bad Luck !!

Why are you running all those apps every 3 to 4 days? Overkill. Not needed. Maybe every 2 weeks at the most.

Everyone has different needs and situations. It's not overkill to him, most likely.

For instance, my Mom was smitten with a bad virus once. Since then, she is exceedingly careful about everything on her machine. Overkill to me, but not to her.

Perspective is the key.

It has nothing to do with perspevtive. Running defrag every other day is not a good thing.
