VERY DISTRACTING AND ANNOYING . . . . . .
Published on November 8, 2005 By mike b1954 In Bug Reports
HELLO !

I RECENTLY BOUGHT O/D WITH ALL THE EXTRAS . . . MARVELLOUS ! !

HOWEVER MY DISPLAY HAS BEGUN TO FLICKER AND I DO NOT KNOW WHY ,AS I HAVE A PRETTY
DECENT SETUP

AMD XP 32OO+,1 GIG DDR, GFORCE 6200 WITH 256MB ONBOARD,400 MHZ FSB (200 IN TWIN MODE),
19"TFT GERICOM MONITOR, 2x 160 gig h/drives onboard . . .

I have just reset (AGAIN!) MY SCREEN RESOLUTION TO 1280 x 1084 . . and screen refresh rate to 75 mhz . .. NO CHANGE WHATSOEVER...

I am fairly new to modding so I am not too familiar with the finer points of setting up, so If there is a solution for me ,please explain it using tips from the book called
"PC for the Brainless" . . .
( I am running out of Fingernails to chew . . . )

thanks in advance ,

Mike

Assuming you are running Windows XP, I would suggest unloading all customization programs to restore the default Windows XP theme.

This would include the following:

1 - If using IconPackager, perform the following: "Start IconPackager > Tools menu > Restore all Icons > click "Yes" to confirm in pop-up dialog > click the "OK" button at bottom of IconPackager window to apply.

2 - If using WindowBlinds, perform the following: "Start WindowBlinds > select "Unload WindowBlinds" > click "Yes" to confirm in the pop-up dialog > wait a few seconds while WindowBlinds unloads, leaving the "Windows Classic" look.

3 - Right-click any widgets that you have running > select Preferences > deselect any options telling the widget to run at startup, then close the widget(s).

4 - If running DesktopX or ObjectDock, just unload the programs.

5 - If running LogonStudio or Bootskin, start the program(s) and select the default Windows XP themes.

6 - If running CursorXP, start CursorXP and select the "Disable all" at the bottom of the CursorXP tab to restore the default mouse pointers.

7 - Right-click the desktop > Properties > Themes tab > select "Windows XP" in the Theme drop-down list > click "Apply" to complete the restoration of the default Windows XP theme.

8 - Restart your computer, and test the functionality of your computer with the customization softwares unloaded and running on the default Windows XP theme.

If you find the flickering issue still persists, you may be looking at a driver issue, or possible hardware issue.

If the flickering goes away, you can then try reapplying your customization software themes until you find the issue (it should be the last software applied before the flickering reappears).

I would suggest the following order for reapplication:

- IconPackager

- WindowBlinds

- ObjectDock

- Widgets

- DesktopX

- CursorXP

- LogonStudio

- Bootskin (if used)

- Windows FX (if used - this one can be very heavy on video resources)

- Any others you may be using (Right-click, IconX, etc.)

Post again as needed for additional help.

Hi people, sorry for butting in, but I too have a flickering display, though feel it's not related to any of my customisation programs. I first noticed it after installing a new ATI Radeon 9550 256mb graphics card, but prior to reloading SDC and my ODNT programs, on a clean install of XP. Updating to the most recent drivers (5.9) improved the situation but did not resolve it entirely.

As the old card would not come out cleanly (it took a bit of wriggling), I'm wondering if it might be related and whether reinstalling the new card from scratch might help. Thanks in advance, any/all help would be appreciated

Starkers,

You might give it a go.

Return Windows to the default theme.

Go here https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=293 and download the ATI Catalyst uninstaller utility - it will remove all ATI files.

Turn off computer and pull the power cord

Ground yourself on PSU housing for a few seconds, and then pull the card and blow out the slot (assuming AGP) with compressed air if you have it

Use a flashlight to verify all contacts in slot are straight and look undamaged (other than normal light scratching from card contacts)

Replace the card pressing straight down into slot, then lock in place

Check all your MoBo connections for security while in the case

Make sure all power cords are connected firmly

Reboot > let windows load the vanilla drivers > install ATI drivers (you may want to download a fresh driver installer file first) > reboot and check for functionality and the flickering issue.

Since we're talking about monitor anomolies here, I have a question... Any idea why my main monitor (Princeton VF912), occasionally gets a greenish tint? Sometimes turning the monitor off, and back on clears it up, and other times, it just stays green, and washed out until it decides to clear up on it's own.
Geforce 5200FX.... latest drivers (but has done this with all driver versions)

Thanks alot, Corky....your prompt reply is most appreciated. I'm a relative newbie to the inner workings, but your instructions are clear, concise and sure to help me through it....once I've snatched a coupla hours sleep (4.45am here now)

Hopefully, this will resolve it....will post the outcome when I'm done.

Everyone, except Koasati, check your power supply stats. Anything under 400w and 18a on the 12v rail is suspect.

Koasati: you're special.... Pull the 15 pin graphic plug and count the pins. Make sure none are missing or bent. Pin numbers 8,9,and 10 come to mind for correct color input. If all is right with the pins, try the card in another system. If it does the same thing, it's time for a new card.

Is it a CRT (i.e not LCD)? If so how old is it? Could be the electron guns or other video driver circuits failing (CRT only).

My old iBook projector dongle has the same problem but purple. Wiggling it solves the problem.

According to Google, Koasati has a CRT.

@ Journeyman Phoon - as you suggested I downloaded new drivers from NVIDIA - so far as I can see, the flickering has stopped.... Thanx for that ...!

@ Wizop Corky O - as you can see from the above I think the problems have been solved . .
However I have made a copy of your suggestions " JUST IN CASE " - - a safety net,if you will .. so that If I have to press the 'PANIC BUTTON ' this can be my next plan of attack !!
I will keep you posted on any more probs ( or not ) as and when they occur . .

ONCE AGAIN, THANX, GUYS !!!!

cheers

Mike

Glad to hear you have all fixed. Happy skinning!

Thanx Gary.... I'll check out the pins. The problem is a little too sporadic to test in another machine. (is there anything you don't know about computers?)

Chris.... CRT, and only a couple of years old, but still possible I have a lemon.

Meowy.... what exactly do you wiggle?
