Microsoft's next operating system (OS) will come with multi-touch features as an alternative to the mouse.

It is hoped the successor will have a better reception than the much-maligned Vista OS, released last year.

Scheduled for release in 2010, the new fingertip interface lets users enlarge and shrink photos, trace routes on maps, paint pictures or play the piano.

"The way you interact with the system will change dramatically," said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

I can hear them already: "Windows 7 is useless bloatware. I stick with Windows 3.11 as my 486SX with 4 MB of RAM and a 12inch CRT can't even use this badly designed new OS. Why should I be forced to upgrade to new hardware? The old OS does everything I need!"

The truth is though that for most of what JoeUser does . . win3.11 and a bigger HD is more than enough.

Can you browse the web?
Move music to your MP3 player?
Check email?
Chat?
Load AOL?

All possible through an OS that old

Sure, if your MP3 player has a DB9 serial connection....

Can you imagine how many people will whinge and cry because they'll have to upgrade their system for the touch-screen feature? I can hear them already: "Windows 7 is useless bloatware. arent some doing that already?

2010 ? I will have only just saved up enough cash to switch from XP to Vista by then, let alone enough for a touchy-feely screen.

Hehe, I can see it now.... that touchy feely thing and all those people who like to eat while at their puter whining about food particles and greasy fingerprints all over their monitors. ..... Fuzzy Logic damning Windows 7 to hell cos it made him put choccy prints all over his.

...speaking of touchy-feely -where's Bebi?

And I can see Bebi's puter not working very well, if at all... it'd have great difficulty concentrating on the task at hand - with all that touchy feely interaction going on... going absolutely berserk and popping a fuse or three over a *naked huggle*

Come to think of it, which I do, dontcha think that Windows 7 will give online porn (especially streaming live webcam action) a whole new meaning... er, touch/feel/sensation? And before anyone does (use the food example above to mention other sticky moments on the monitor, etc)... please don't

Which reminds me.... while it don't have that touchy feely thing going on, my fave puter store has a 24" Viewsonic flatscreen that keeps jumping out at me, saying: "BUY ME, BUY ME, BUY ME!!!!" At just AU$340 ish (discount for cash), I'm finding it harder and harder to resist its pleas and see my resolve weakening, sooner or later.

As for Windows 7... yeah, there'll be those that'll grizzle n' carry on about unnecessary bloat and 'useless apps', but it'll be like those who said car radios were unnecessary bloat and not essential to getting from A to B, and now happily listen to radio/CD's/MP3's while driving along in their computer controlled vehicles with power windows/drinks cooler~heater/porta potty built into the drivers seat. After a while they'll be eating humble pie and saying " how did I ever manage without touchy feely, on-screen manipulation!"

Touch-screen? And have my monitor getting all gunked up from people constantly touching it?? Nowai man.
on May 29, 2008
So...if you don't get a new touchy-feely monitor, you can't use Windows 7?

Again...I'll stick with XPMCE. With everything going up in $$$ I can barely afford gas, let alone the hous utilities. Water in CA. is going up 17 percent this July. Gas and electric have gone through the roof.
I just won't upgrade my system anymore. I'd rather eat!!

I always say to my 3 year old "Don't touch the screen"

Now you will have to?

This makes being a consistent parent impossible! Damn you, evil Microsoft!

I hear it will have a "scratch and sniff" mode.(I am so not going there!)

We should be calling it Vista sp2 but There isn't money in that for Microsoft. I got shafted with Windows ME and now Vista. To be even remotely excited or interested in Windows 7 seems laughable, except I don't find it funny. I feel like a fool for jumping into Vista.

To promote it for Microsoft just seems wrong from my perspective. By promoting Windows 7 you are helping them cover their tracks of how Vista was not ready and even Bill Gates said it was crap. Microsoft pretends windows ME never existed and they will do the same with Vista if people help them cover their tracks.

The latest Dreamscene content released by MS is a joke. One of the dremascenes actually moves/shifts on cycle. The others must have been winners in a grade school competition.

To steal a line from another commenter in another thread... I think I may upgrade to XP and take it to my grave.

/ yes, I am bitter.....
