Microsoft's next operating system (OS) will come with multi-touch features as an alternative to the mouse.

It is hoped the successor will have a better reception than the much-maligned Vista OS, released last year.

Scheduled for release in 2010, the new fingertip interface lets users enlarge and shrink photos, trace routes on maps, paint pictures or play the piano.

"The way you interact with the system will change dramatically," said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

Meh.. all looks very gimmicky and clunky, the finger can never replace a mouse for precision, when will MS stop dumbing things down and get professional?

also.. look forward to it only being on Ultimate version.

I'd rather use a pen, for drawing. Much more precise than a mouse.
I can't use a wacom, so I'll be looking forward to getting this feature.

That's not going to make owners of current laptop systems very happy. Having an OS with "touchy-feely" features that they can't use.

Well, I guess it fits in with my timetable for building a new desktop system anyways.

...speaking of touchy-feely -where's Bebi?

Can you imagine how many people will whinge and cry because they'll have to upgrade their system for the touch-screen feature?

I can hear them already: "Windows 7 is useless bloatware. I stick with Windows 3.11 as my 486SX with 4 MB of RAM and a 12inch CRT can't even use this badly designed new OS. Why should I be forced to upgrade to new hardware? The old OS does everything I need!"
